Johnson's Lawn Manicure and Maintenance

How to have a beautiful lawn all summer in Houston.

1. Water your lawn before 6:00 am

2. Water your lawn 10-15 minutes at least every other day; daily is
better.

3. Do not cut your lawn down to the thatch nor allow your lawn care
provider to do so.

4. Nourish your lawn with non-burning turf builder and minerals, iron.

Your lawn is a living, growing organism. Just as we need water to stay hydrated, so does your lawn.
Imagine just lying in the sun day after day after day with no water! Continue to imagine that you are
trampled on, rolled on, neglected and your hair trimmed below the scalp. Sound uncomfortable? Now
we know that sounds a bit drastic, however that is the life of an uncared for lawn. Most of us have St.
Augustine grass. It is very hearty and pretty hard to kill. It can thrive with minimum attention. Watering in
the morning rather than at night will help to alleviate the formation of fungus in the lawn. Mowing the
lawn higher will allow for a more plush appearance and eliminate weeds. Weeds need the sun to
grow; a thick, healthy lawn will choke out the weeds! Cutting the lawn down to the thatch allows in more
sunlight which will feed the weeds and does damage to the thatch and make it harder for it to
regenerate and make new grass. Remember, you pay your lawn care provider for a service. Get your
money's worth! If they refuse to adjust their mower to your specifications... you may want to consider
one that wants to provide you the service for which you are paying.

Mr. Handyman
Marques Griffin

Finding a Good Handyman

Mr. Handyman Enlists Richard Karn as National Spokesperson  Mr. Handyman, a national home repair
and maintenance franchise and the world’s No. 1 employer of handyman worldwide, has just
announced that television’s most famed handyman persona, Richard Karn, the competent and dryly
humorous character Al Borland from ABC’s former sitcom “Home Improvement,” has joined its ranks
and will serve as the national spokesperson and face of the brand for the next two years.  During eight
seasons as Tim Allen’s sidekick on “Tool Time,” the show within a show on “Home Improvement,”
Karn and cast enjoyed the spotlight as part of America’s number one family comedy throughout the 90’
s. Starting in 2008, Karn will enjoy a new kind of spotlight as Mr. Handyman’s spokesperson, providing
the face and personality for the brand that was recently ranked as the No. 1 handyman service
franchise throughout the country by the January 2008 issue of Entrepreneur magazine.  “I am thrilled to
be a part of the Mr. Handyman family,” Karn said. “In addition to my handyman role on ‘Home
Improvement,’ my father and other relatives were builders and architects, and I am a strong believer in
the Mr. Handyman concept and its mission to provide consumers with professional, credible and
reliable handymen for a variety of home repair and maintenance requests.”

Remedy Roofing

Is Your Roof Energy Efficient?

Looking for ways to lower your electricity bills this summer? You’re roof can be a great way to save
money. Homeowners have many options when looking to make their roofs more energy efficient,
including some steps you can take without replacing your entire roof.

Ventilation is key when cooling your roof or attic. The cooler you can keep your attic, the easier it will be
to cool your home. One of the most common ways to increase the ventilation in your attic is by adding
ridge vents to your existing roof.

Ridge vents are an effective way to ventilate your attic and are often covered by the roofing material
used on the rest of the roof making them blend well into the look of your home. A ridge vent runs the
entire length of the roof ridge, which encourages even ventilation throughout the attic area.

Ridge vents are only one of many ways to make your roof more energy efficient and every home is
different. Contact a local, reputable roofing company that can provide you with an assessment of your
home’s ventilation needs.

Tips From Ace Hardware
The Helpful Hardware Man's Corner - Answers by Lou Manfredini

Q:I am an avid fan of yours and have a question on how to best repair cracks above doors in our home.
My husband spackled them originally and they have popped open again. I want to paint the one room
and need to fix these before painting. How do we keep them from splitting open again? I believe they
happened when we had a new roof put on a few years ago and I didn't notice at the time to tell the
construction crew what happened.

A: Thanks for listening and watching my shows. Try digging out those cracks and then use some fiber
mesh tape to cover them. Use Dura-bond joint compound to set the tape. Scrape and lightly sand, and
then apply two more coats of regular joint compound letting each coat dry overnight. Sand, prime and
paint.
