Electrical Safety in your Home or Business
Electrical Distribution and Lighting Equipment Fires
in U.S. Homes: 1999-2002 Annual Averages
Electrical distribution or lighting equipment was involved in an estimated 32,000 reported home fires
annually.
These 32,000 fires caused annual averages of:
• 220 deaths
• 950 injuries
• $674 million in property damage
Overall, electrical distribution or lighting equipment was involved in:
• 9 percent of all reported home fires
• 8 percent of all home fire deaths, and
• 6 percent of all home fire injuries
Source: National Fire Protection Association, 4/06
Cables, switches, receptacles and other equipment can get worn over time and so it is important to get
them checked and replaced by a qualified electrician. Electrical Services need to be inspected and
upgraded if additional electrical loads have been added to the system.
If you are carrying out electrical work in your home or business in the State of Texas you now have to
follow the new rules issued by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), which came
into effect on September 1, 2005. This is a new area for the TDLR and is called the Texas Electrical
Safety and Licensing Act. You are now required to use a licensed Electrical Contractor, who hires
competent licensed persons to comply with Licensing Regulations.
All Electrical contractors are now required to have their Electrical Contractor´s name, address, phone
number, and license number on all proposals, invoices, and written contracts, in the following format:
"Regulated by The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, P. O. Box 12157, Austin, Texas
78711, 1-800-803-9202, 512-463-6599; website: www.license.state.tx.us/complaints"
All Electrical Contractors licensed by the State of Texas are required to carry Liability Insurance. You
can call the TDLR at 1-800-803-9202, 512-463-6599, or visit their web site at http://www.license.state.tx.
us/electricians/elec.htm to see if they are registered and in good standing with the State of Texas.

Chem-Tech Termite & Pest Control
Butch Baumann
Do you have a termite problem?
Nationwide, subterranean termite damage approaches a billion dollars a year. Protect your home by
watching for signs or termites.
* a temporary swarm of winged insects around your home
*discarded wings near doors and windows
*mud tubes going up your slab
*hollow sounding wall studs
Is it a termite or an ant?
The answer to this question is important to know, because measures for controlling the two pests vary.
Winged termites are usually only 1/8" or so in length, and have straight antenna and no "waistline."
Their wings are long and of equal length. Ants are often several times larger. They have elbowed
antennae and three distinct body segments, with very slim waists. Their front wings are much longer
than the back ones. Termites break off their wings; ants do not.
To be sure termites are the problem; call us for a home inspection.

Tips From Ace Hardware
The Helpful Hardware Man's Corner - Answers by Lou Manfredini
Q:I just bought my first house and need to give the place a little bit of a makeover. The previous home
owners were smokers, which has left the home smelling like a bar. Being new to home improvements,
I'm unsure of what the first steps are to getting rid of this smell. Is this something fresh paint will cover?
Are there any pre-steps I should perform before I paint the walls the color I want?
A: You need to spend some time washing all the walls down first using TSP, warm water and a
sponge. You will be amazed at what comes off of the walls. Then rinse the walls, let them dry. Next,
prime all the walls with a stain killing primer like Ace's Stain Halt, then you can re-paint. Also buy some
fresh wave odor neutralizer to combat the smell; the crystal gel will work wonders.
