Energy Efficient Holiday Lighting

‘Tis the season---soon everyone will be decorating their home for the holidays.  Most people currently
use standard incandescent lights or mini-lights for their decorating.  However, these use a significant
amount of energy and regularly involve costly bulb replacement.  In fact---it’s often easier to throw away a
string of lights and buy new each year rather than buy replacement bulbs and figure out which bulbs are
burned out.
Wouldn’t you like a better way??  Consider LED lighting.  LED lights have a number of benefits over
conventional lighting:

*Energy-efficient: 0.04 watts per bulb; mini-lights use TEN TIMES more energy and standard (C-7) bulbs
use 100 TIMES more energy.  What does that mean to the average homeowner??  In dollars---the energy
cost of lighting 500 bulbs for 5 hours for 30 days will be approximately $18.90 for standard bulbs; vs.
$1.89 for mini-lights; vs. a MERE 19 CENTS FOR LED LIGHTS!!  Wow – what a savings!

*Long life span: up to 100,000 hours used indoors or 50,000
hours used outdoors.

*Safety: no chance of combustion from the cool temperature
bulbs.

*Sturdy bulbs: the epoxy lenses are virtually indestructible.

*Lamp Replacement: if a bulb does burn out, the other bulbs WILL stay lit, so you can easily identify and
replace a bad bulb.

Every year, LED holiday lighting technology improves.  In the beginning, many people didn’t like the “blue-
white” look of the LED lights.  Now…you can buy warm-white LED lights that mimic the look of traditional
incandescent lighting.  You can still maintain the beautiful, traditional look of Christmas – while saving
energy at the same time!

Happy Holidays!!

Winterizing Your Lawn

As we head into winter the buzz word for lawn care is Winterizer.  Each year people spend hard earned
money on this product without knowing what it is and why they are putting it out.

What is Winterizer and do we need it?  Winterizer has the same basic ingredients as the fertilizer sold
in the summer except that it has reduced nitrogen.  Nitrogen is what causes your grass to green in the
warmer months but in the winter the roots are the important part as the grass is dormant.   Applying a
fertilizer that is low in nitrogen gives the roots a good feeding encouraging their growth throughout the
winter to make a great show in the spring with a healthy green lawn.

The recommended times for application of commercial fertilizers is three applications per year with
one being the winterizer.  It is not too late to apply the winterizer now but after the first freeze it would be
best to wait until the spring to start a new fertilization schedule.

Another choice is organic fertilizers like poultry litter or worm castings which are applied four times per
year and there is never a bad time to apply these. The benefits of organic fertilizers are that they create
healthy lawns that are less susceptible to chinch bugs and brown patch, two most common problems
in St. Augustine Lawns.

Holiday Cleaning Tips from Maid Pro

1. Start with a clean surface: before you decorate the house, dust and clean anything that will be
covered with holiday cheer. You’ll be happy you did you when put away decorations in January and don’
t find a year’s worth of dust bunnies on the mantle underneath

2. De-clutter your home. If you’re not using it, put it away. While this is good advice for any time of the
year, it rings true especially around the holidays when extra “stuff” seems to appear overnight.

3. Don’t try to clean all at once. The holidays are stressful enough without trying to find an entire day to
get the house ready for company. Do a little here and a little there and soon enough, the house will be
clean.

4. Use the right product for the job: many folks have specialized cleaners for every surface, which
means a lot of bottles to lug around. Choose core products such as an all-purpose cleaner, a floor
cleaner and a disinfectant.

5. Do one room at a time. Don’t move from room to room dusting all surfaces: clean anything that
needs to be cleaned in one room before moving to the next. MaidPro begins with the kitchen and
bathrooms before starting with the primary living areas. And it goes without saying: if guests won’t see
a certain room, there’s no need to clean it.

6. Enlist family members’ help in cleaning. Little ones can dust, fluff pillows and pick up; older kids can
run the vacuum or sweep floors. Just be careful with household chemicals, as always, around living
things.

7. Relax. The holiday season is about celebrating with friends and family, not getting stressed out over
the state of the house. With any luck, folks will remember the happy occasions and not the dust!
