Air Conditioning Outfitters of Texas
Thomas Grimes

Efficiency is the Key

It is that time of year again when our utility bills jump higher than the outdoor temperature. The best
practice is to have a licensed consultant come out and make sure the home, as a whole, is working as
efficiently as possible. Here are a few helpful tips to assure you are running green.

1. Replace your return air filters every 30-45 days. You should have 200 square inches of return air for
every ton of air conditioning.

2. Keep the condensing coils clean and free from air restrictions will help with the removal of heat from
the home.

3. Check around the return and supply duct work for air leaks. The Department of Energy says we lose
between 30-40 % efficiency in the duct system alone. These leaks should be taped and sealed.

4. Insulate and secure all attic access doors so you are not pulling 150 degrees of attic air into your
home.

5. Have all air conditioning equipment serviced and the drain line cleared to prevent water overflow into
the home. Your air conditioning system produces about 30 to 40 gallons of water a day in the summer.
These drain lines, if not treated, can cause major water damage to your home’s ceilings and floors.

If your home’s utility bills are high or your air conditioning system is running continuously, a licensed
consultant and energy auditor can come in and evaluate your home for more helpful energy saving tips
and goals for starting your summer off on a green note.

ACOTX would like to wish your and your family a healthy, safe, and efficient air conditioned summer.

Acclaim Renovations
Jon Prebish

I’m Ready To Remodel…Let’s Demo!

A combination of today’s economy and the numerous shows on television depicting “cheap” remodeling
fixes contribute to many homeowners being overconfident about remodeling their own home.  After all,
how hard can it be?  You can spruce up a room with $2,000 and have it all wrapped up in 30 minutes!

The truth of remodeling is that it can be very intrusive and costly without the proper planning and design.
One of the biggest mistakes I see made these days are homeowners who are trying to fix up their house
and save money but only have half of a plan, and that plan is usually in their
head.  The logical conclusion to this is to hire a General Contractor, right?  Not necessarily.  For some,
that is probably the best choice, but for the “Do it Yourselfers” and the homeowners who want to be the
General Contractor themselves, plan your project out before you swing the demo hammer.

You may be surprised what you can learn by talking to an architect or interior designer depending on the
size of your project.  If nothing else, they might be able to give you some realistic expectations about the
project you are about to start.  A successful remodeling project can be
one of the most rewarding experiences you can complete as a homeowner. Just remember, before you
swing that hammer, pause, seek some professional advice, and plan ahead.

If you’re ready to remodel…Plan Ahead!

Need Computer Help?
Tomas Limon

Heat and Notebook computers don’t get along

Heat can be your Notebooks worst enemy. With the many clients I visit on a daily basis I have ran into
some common problems I’d like to point out regarding heat and notebook computers. You may have
noticed the industry has changed the name of “Laptops” to “Notebooks”, because sitting a notebook on
your lap can cause blockage of the fan or air flow which causes major heat problems that may be
detrimental to the processor, battery, and hard drive.

Many people use notebooks as portable DVD players these days. Please don’t use notebooks on top of
beds.  By doing so the weight of the notebook sinks into the bed, causing the fan and air ducts to
become blocked.  This causes the same heat problems if not more than running a notebook on your
lap.  One way around this is to set your notebook on top of a hard book which puts it on a nice flat
elevated surface.  Make sure the area of the book is larger than the notebook and the rubber feet on the
bottom of the notebook are on the book itself.

If you battery is fully charged and you have your notebook plugged into the power outlet remove the battery
this will lower the heat generated by the notebook and prolong the life of your battery as well.

I hope this info is useful to everyone.
