Designing Your Garden Lifestyle: The Importance of Having Plan

Consumers are more concerned than ever with making smart purchases.  This extends to outdoor
purchases.  Many people have desires for creating an outdoor living space, but are apprehensive about
spending money in their yards.

Just because you are not sure if you’re ready to spend money in your yard doesn’t mean you can’t plan
for the future.  You can—and should—start out with a landscape plan.  A design by a landscape architect
will lay out your entire yard in a series of spaces you can enjoy according to your own unique lifestyle.

So don’t put off commissioning a design for your yard just because you don’t plan to install right now.
You may install when you are ready to begin the project; meanwhile your design can serve as a guide to

•        maintaining an overall vision for the yard
•        installing in phases
•        keeping your budget balanced with your desires

As you prepare to have a landscape architectural design created for your yard, look for an architect who

•        asks you how you intend to use the space you are designing—whether you want to entertain, relax,
seek privacy, etc.
•        incorporates your overall budget into the design, giving you a set of beautiful and useful outdoor
elements
•        gives you options for installing in phases, ensuring that
o        upon each phase completion, the yard looks complete
o        each phase offers distinct, livable space for you to enjoy

Chinch Bugs

This time of year is prime chinch bug season.  With the drought we have had, these insects can invade
your yard fast and leave you with nothing but a memory of the lawn you once had.  Control of chinch bugs
can be tricky and should start in the early spring.

Chinch bugs are attracted to dry, unhealthy St Augustine grass.  In a perfect year we would have healthy
grass going into the spring, have plenty of spring rain and a moderate summer.  What we have though is
dry, stressed lawns.  Even those with sprinkler systems are susceptible as most homeowners tend to
over water to compensate for the lack of rain which causes shorter roots which insects just love.
Watering deeply and less frequently is the best recipe for watering your lawn.

If you notice that you have an irregular shaped yellow or dead patch you may already be infested.  It is very
important that you properly diagnose your problem before you treat it.  Incorrect chemical use can make
your problem worse by feeding a fungus when you thought it was an insect. The best way to diagnose
this insect is to use an empty soup can with both ends removed and hammer it into the ground in green
grass surrounding the problem area.  After one end is securely in the ground, fill it with water and any
chinch bugs present will float to the top. They are very small, adults have black bodies and white wings,
the nymphs are wingless and reddish.  Once diagnosed, there are a variety of products available to treat
and control them.

Chinch bugs suck the life out of the grass and then inject a toxin into the plant which retards its ability to
absorb water which then kills it.  If you have had a chinch bug infestation, you may have to replace the
grass or wait for the area to fill in.

Consulting a landscape professional is recommended to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment.

Happy Gardening!

What to do after a Hurricane

Last month I gave you 5 simple steps that you want to take when a hurricane threatens to make sure that
you and your loved ones are ready. This month I would like to give you 5 simple steps to take AFTER a
hurricane.

1)  Do not drive unless it is absolutely necessary.

2)  Do not drink or prepare food with tap water until you are certain it’s not contaminated.

3)  Look for advice and instructions about emergency medical, food and housing aid and other forms of
assistance.  Here are some possible sources; The Houston Chronicle, News Radio 740 KTRH and
click2houston.com.

4)  Take photos of any damage, both of building and their contents, for insurance claims.  Make minor
repairs to prevent further damage or looting, but do not make major repairs or dispose of damaged
property until it has been inspected by an adjuster.  Save all receipts.
