Winter Clean Up

Late fall is a good time to do those garden projects that you didn’t get to earlier in the year.  It is more
than raking leaves and trimming trees, now is the time to do some heavy cleanup.

This is a good time to divide bulbs to get the most bloom from them in the spring.  It is important for their
life cycle to wait until they are going into dormancy before you divide the bulbs. Most bulbs need dividing
every 2-3 years especially Lilies.

Knockout and Climbing Roses are at the end of their bloom cycle for this year so giving them a good
“hair cut” now will ensure a wonderful bloom in the spring.

Prune shrubs and trim ornamental grasses now and make sure you remove all dead leaves.  This is
important as the dead leaves can harbor diseases that can re-occur next year.

Winterize your lawn and for a winter green lawn, spread rye grass now.  Using organic fertilizers year
round, spring and fall, will ensure the proper balance for your yard and there is never a bad time to apply
them.

Mulch your flowerbeds to give them protection from the cold.  Spending the money to mulch your beds
twice per year with good hardwood mulch will make your plants healthier for the coming seasons.
Hardwood mulch is a natural product that is better for plants and is not burnt (black mulch) nor dyed (red
mulch).

Happy Gardening!

Go Green! Protect Your Fence.

Robert Frost is known for saying, "Good Fences make good neighbors." Fences are a part of suburban
life, and IF YOU ARE GOING TO BUILD A FENCE, YOU SHOULD TAKE CARE OF IT.  DO IT FOR THE
SAKE OF THE TREES THAT DIED GOING INTO THAT FENCE.

It's usually better for the environment to get as much use out of something old than it is to have a
something new manufactured. Maintaining the things you own is part of smart and sustainable living.
Here are some “Go Green” fence tips:

1. If you have rectangular fence posts, make sure that top surface isn't flat. Either cut them at an angle or
put sloping metal caps on top of them. This will reduce rot and keep water from standing on the top
surface of the post.

2. Staining your fence is the best way to extend its life.

3. Rake leaves and debris away from the fence. Don't let leaves pile up at the bottom of your fence. That
will rot your fence. Make sure to keep vines and bushes from growing near the fence and/or trim them
regularly. Plants will damage the fence as they grow.

4. Make sure your sprinklers don't constantly spray your fence. Water will pool up against the bottom of
the boards and rot the wood.

5. Make repairs to your fence often. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

6. Clean your fence. A lot of people do not know it but wood fences can be cleaned to a like new
appearance.

7. Have adequate drainage. Make sure water doesn't pool up against your fence.

As always we hope that you have found this article helpful.  If you have questions about this article or if

Tips for Hiring a Heating and Cooling Contractor

Here are some great tips to keep in mind when hiring a Heating and Cooling Contractor.

1. Referrals are a great way to start. Ask family, friends and neighbors about their experience with heating
and cooling contractors in your area. Inquire about customer service, job performance, and if the job was
completed on time.

2. Every state is different when it comes to license and insurance requirements for contractors. It’s
important to do some research before you get started.

3. Have your contractor assess your needs within your home. Your contractor should spend time
evaluating your current system, including duct system (if applicable) for air leaks and insulation and
measure air flow to make sure it meets manufacturer specifications.

4. Recognize the Energy Star logo. Energy Star qualified products meet strict energy efficiency guidelines
set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. These products offer long term energy savings.

5. When getting an estimate make sure it’s in writing and itemized. Compare contractors proposals
including warranties, energy efficiency and cost.

6. Before a contractor gets started working, be sure to sign a written proposal. This will specify the job
schedule, warranty information and cost.
